Coaching & Consulting

I love partnering with other educators to strengthen their practice and exchange ideas. Please contact me if you think we can work together!

One on one teacher coaching

We’ll meet over Zoom, unless you’re local and we meet over coffee.

Math Content Brush Up:

Some of us didn’t love (or excel) at math in school… but find ourselves teaching it anyways. HiSET/GED math review for multi-subject adult education teachers who struggle with math. We’ll work through the content that trips you up, so you feel more confident helping your students.

Brain-friendly Teaching:

Few of us were taught how learning actually happens in the brain – and we don’t always have time to keep up with the latest research. We’ll review key research-backed practices and work towards practical ways to incorporate brain based learning, neuroscience and the science of learning into adult basic education classes.

Level Up your Lesson:

Sometimes you just need to think with another (neutral, supportive) teacher about a lesson, topic or unit that just isn’t working the way you want. We’ll take a deep dive on a single unit or lesson to identify what’s working, what’s not and how to strengthen it.

Coaching for Teacher Groups

Strengths-Based Instructional Coaching:

With our students, we know that the best learning happens when we combine collaboration and individual attention; when we start from strengths and set authentic goals; when we approach learning with support and encouragement. It’s what teachers need too.

My instructional coaching package includes facilitated group work, peer support, individual action planning and one-on-one coaching. We’ll work together over a period of months to set and meet individual goals, and build a culture of professional learning and teacher growth.

Group Packages

Programs or teacher teams may enroll together in any of my individual coaching plans. We’ll combine group and individual sessions

Why Don’t They Remember?!? Brain-Based Strategies to Boost Student Learning

Every adult education teacher has had the experience: students engaged, learning, proud of their progress one day…. and struggling to recall or apply their learning the next day.  It’s frustrating and common, but not inevitable. Brain science increasingly offers evidence-based techniques that help students retain and truly master their learning.

For “Non-Math People”… Who Teach Math Anyway

Anyone can learn math … but for teachers who did not have positive math education experiences themselves, teaching math can be stressful. Still, it’s part of the job for many multi-subject adult educators. We’ll explore some of the research on math and learning and discuss how people who don’t identify with math can use their unique strengths to help their students succeed

The Struggle is Real: Self-Care & Balance for Teachers

Teaching is meaningful, important, rewarding… and hard. If we are to do our best work and sustain our efforts, we must find ways to manage the hard parts, amplify the positives and maintain our energy.

Learning about Learning: Low-Prep Strategies to help ABE Students become more Skillful, Independent Learners

Many adult learners enter ABE programs with big goals, and a desire to achieve, but little understanding of how to learn/study effectively. We’ll explore low-prep classroom routines and activities to help students understand their own learning, practice metacognition, and become more skillful, independent learners.

Learning Math by Learning about Learning

In this workshop, teachers will design a lesson plan or series of lesson plans to engage their students in math, metacognition and skill building… simultaneously. Mix and match learning topics, presentation methods, authentic data collection and multiple math skills to design the learning experience that suits your students.  A resulting lesson might include growth mindsets, number lines and decimals; or study strategies and fractions; or grit, surveys and bar graphs.

Customized Professional Development

We’ve all sat through generic workshops that don’t quite meet your particular needs. Let’s not do that.

I can tailor a professional development workshop to the needs and interests of your group. I can offer one-time sessions or a series of linked sessions to support adult education professionals.

Topics might include:

  • Brain Based Learning
  • Teacher Self Care
  • Math Anxiety / Math Classroom Culture
  • Student Choice / Learner Centered Classrooms
  • Differentiation / Multi-Level Math Classes
  • Reflective Practice
  • Incorporating, Training or Managing Classroom Volunteers

To request a customized workshop please email me at mathacognitive@gmail.com, include the topics of interest, your group size and any relevant context, and approximate timeline.

Student Presentations or Workshops:

I talk with my students about brains, metacognition, math learning…. I’d love to meet yours. In person in New England, or by video to talk about math anxiety, brain based learning or how to take charge of your learning.

Adult Education Program Consulting

Systems Tune Up:

A good system frees up time…. But it takes time to develop. And you don’t have it.

I love building spreadsheets, outlining procedures and finding more efficient and effective ways to work. (I know, I’m weird).  I can help you streamline your intake, attendance, student tracking, data and other processes, so you can spend more time teaching your students and strengthening your program. Contact me via email or Upwork.

Free labor isn’t free: Volunteer Management Systems & Training

I managed dozens of volunteers at five adult education sites (simultaneously!) with different calendars, day and evening schedules, ESOL and HiSET classes, matching each to the culture of a particular teachers’ classroom. My teachers were satisfied, my volunteer retention went up, and my program expanded.

I managed it by staying organized. I can get you organized too. Or, design or implement a volunteer orientation and training program to get the most out of your volunteers.

EFL, MSG, HSE, LACES, LMNOP… Making sense of data and reporting

I speak data, spreadsheets and LACES. I can build attendance and assessment tracking systems to help you monitor enrollment and MSG targets, or a set of searches and procedures to speed up the desk reviews. (Massachusetts DESE funded programs)
